The 4th Ishigakijima Shonan International Documentary Film Festival Call for Films

Ishigaki Island Shonan International Documentary Film Festival started in 2019.
We are now accepting entries for the 4th edition of the festival.

<Call for entries>
Films must have been produced on or after January 1, 2023.
Short Length: Documentary films of 5 minutes or more but less than 15 minutes in length.
Feature Length: 60 minutes or longer
Must be intended as a documentary by the filmmaker.
(Fact-based films or films that reproduce factual information are also eligible.)

<Prize (activity support money)
A total of 200,000 yen is planned (method of distribution will be determined according to the number of applications received).

<Deadline>
Deadline for the first round of applications: October 31, 2024 (Thursday)
Second call deadline: Wednesday, April 30, 2025
Third call deadline: Friday, October 31, 2025

<Entry Requirements>
International Competition (Points will be given to students or those over 60 years old. (Points will be given to students or those over 60 years of age, and works must be subtitled in English or Japanese.)


Domestic Student A Division (Vocational school, University, Graduate school)


Domestic Student B Division (High School Students and Under)


Domestic Senior Section (60 years old and over)


General Section (Non-student and under 60 years old)

 

Location Film Division (Points will be given to students or those over 60 years of age. (Points will be given to students or those over 60 years old, and works set in the Yaeyama or Shonan area)

 

Each of the above categories will be judged separately in the Short Length Competition and the Feature Length Competition.

The Grand Prix, Audience Award, Honorable Mention, and Special Journalism Award will also be awarded.

If there are no entries that pass the preliminary screening, the relevant category may not be awarded.

*Additional categories may be added depending on the situation.

<Application Rules and Regulations

Please fill out the following information and send it to the Festival Office via e-mail, noting the following (1)-(6).

(1) Media format of your film Please submit your video to Youtube or Vimeo and include its URL. If the video is password protected, please include the password.
*Submission of video files via online storage is not acceptable.


(2) Please include a 200-word summary of the work in the e-mail.


(3) Please provide a biography of the filmmaker in about 100 characters.


(4) Please provide other necessary information.

 (title of the work, number of minutes, director's name, name of the submitter, address, telephone number, and e-mail address)


(5) Please be sure to provide Japanese subtitles for works created in languages other than Japanese.

   *If your film was created in Japanese and is entered in the International Competition section, please be sure to include English subtitles.


(6) Be sure to send a scanned copy of the bank transfer statement from the entry fee remittance procedure together with the entry fee as an attachment. You may also attach a photo image of the bank transfer statement to the e-mail.

<About the decision of the films to be screened at the Official Selection>
The directors (or submitters) of the films nominated for the final selection out of the first call for entries for the 4th Festival will be notified by e-mail.

When submitting screening materials for selected filmmakers, (1) include a 5-second black color at the beginning of the film. (2) For feature-length films, please deliver the data to the Secretariat in a format not exceeding approximately 20 GB.


Please note that we will not be able to answer any questions regarding the reasons for selection. However, the final jury members will critique the winning films at the screening venue.
If your film is selected for an official screening at the Ishigakijima/Shonan International Documentary Film Festival, please submit it to the festival office via Gigafile or other means after notification of selection. Please note that screening materials provided for screening will not be returned.

 

<Handling of Copyrights>
The copyright of the work belongs to the applicant.

Music used in the work must be copyright free or with prior permission of the copyright holder.
The use of any part of a cartoon, literature, television or film must be approved in advance by the copyright holder.


After the festival, the selected films may be posted on the Internet, subject to the director's wishes.
